Okay, someone has to help me understand this one! How can any "Christian" leader say that they are excited about Obama winning the Democratic primary and potentially becoming our next president? Martin Luther King said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." n "Christian" (who I have many doctrinal disagreements with), and he says that he got "goose bumps" upon hearing that Obama secured the Democratic primary nomination. So was he just happy that a person of color made this accomplishment or does he also think that Obama will make a good President? I would hope that Jakes would simply be excited about the progress we have made to look past the color of someone's skin and to who they are as a person. I would definitely be with him on that.However, Jakes goes on in the article to set a tone that unofficially endorses Obama as a great choice for the President. Jakes says in the article, "...I thank him (Obama) for accepting the torch that was lit by our forefathers and proudly carrying it through the darkness of our struggles, trials and tribulations, bringing light and hope to a new generation..." Huh? I'm not sure I would call abortion and homosexual marriage a "light and hope to a new generation".
How can ANY "Christian" endorse or cast their vote for a candidate with a value system that goes against Biblical teaching? Better yet, how can a presidential candidate claim that they are a Christian and then stand on issues that are blatantly contradictory to obvious Christian doctrine and Biblical stances? "I am a Christian, BUT I think it's okay to kill unborn children. I am a Christian, BUT I think that it is okay for two men to get married." What? This makes absolutely no sense! However, I know the reasoning...
If you are a "Christian" and you put your wallet above God, then you have taken God off the throne and put your wallet in His place. If your wallet is now your god, you will compromise your Christianity for issues like taxes, unions (job security), education, health care, etc. Are these issues important? Of course! However, do they come before Biblical precedents? They shouldn't.
I hear some say, "Well, my Christianity is a separate issue than my political views." Really? Why? Since when can you put your Christianity on the shelf? A "Christian" is who you are, not something that you can take on or off in a moment. Everything that you do in life, every decision that you make should be based upon a Christian, Biblical point of view.
Many "Christians" do not realize it, but when you cast your vote, you are choosing sides. You are saying, "Yes, I believe in what that candidate believes in. Yes, Obama, I will stand with you. I'm coming over to stand with you on abortion and homosexual rights and gay marriages." I would never suppose to put words in God's mouth, but can you just imagine God saying something like, "What in the world are you doing? Why are you siding with someone who stands for everything that I am against?"
I believe every one of us are accountable unto God as to who we cast our vote for. When you pull the lever in November, who's side will you be on?
